During high school I was never much of an active person. Once I graduated that changed. I began to work and making a little money helped because I could finally afford to sign up for a gym. For a while I lived by gyms and stayed far away from cardio as possible. Then I found a love for running and it was history. October 2016 I ran my first professional race and since then I have been racking up miles and medals. With running came the appreciation of yoga which helps with flexibility to become a better runner and also mental focus (which is crucial). I have ventured into spinning as well because one of my long time dreams has been to own a bike, but since that has yet to happen; spin classes are the next best thing! As you can see, I have turned into the cardio queen now. I actually do not have a membership to any gym because I enjoy classes filled with good energy and an instructor. I am a person that needs structure otherwise I will do nothing. Now here is where the fun part begins … I decided to try out CrossFit Shazam, this was the first time I ever said yes to a CrossFit class in my life!
So before I go into the class itself I want to talk about all of the other perks I found as a local. We all know parking is a P.I.T.A in Miami, either its hard to find, its never free, and you wind up far from where you need to be. Well, Shazam has their own lot in the back and it comes with all of the artsy vibes as well. What’s that they say..? Gotta take a pic or it didn’t happen? I must admit. Never being in a CrossFit gym was a bit scary for me because I did not know what to expect. I was greeted with smiling faces that comforted me the entire time. Roger, the owner of the studio is so welcoming, nice, warm, and actually made me get over my fear by just telling me to relax and enjoy the ride. Its funny, I love the idea of trying new things but it is always scary when coming out of your comfort zone. One thing that resonated with me was when Roger said “how can you be afraid of something you’ve never tried before?” and honestly, that’s what knocked some sense into me and I chilled out. Thanks Roger! Haha! Mindset is everything to me, I believe it is also contagious… And Shazam’s midset is the type I want to be around!

That’s right! They proudly serve Box Coffee cold-brew on tap! Now if that doesn’t make you smile IDK what will! I have never been the type to go for energy drinks so the fact that they have Box Coffee here which is something natural to help me wake up and kick a** is a huge perk for me! And as you’ve seen in my previous post, I am a huge fan of Box Coffee. This made my day!
So now about the workout itself… Let’s just say that NOW I understand why CrossFitters around the world hate burpees. LOL! Our WOD began with about half a mile lap to get our blood bumping. Then we came back into the gym and were put to workout with a partner. The WOD consisted of 30 box jumps, 30 power cleans, 30 push-ups and 30 push-ups press (15 each per person) ~ that’s not all though, there was a timer going and every minute on the minute we had to stop what we were doing and drop to do 4 burpees synchronized with our partner. This kind of workout is called a HIIT workout which HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. HIIT workouts push you to burn as many calories in a minimum amount of time. Lets just say that the time coming to an end saved my life because I felt like I was dying (in a good way)! Roger came to check up on me and as I talked I laughed and told him that I died and it was my ghost he was having a conversation with. LOL! I took the class Saturday morning and today it is Wednesday and I am still a little sore EVERYWHERE! How awesome is that?! Would I come back?! Hell yes! I am already planning my next visit. They also have yoga on Sundays and you already know that I will be there! I can never say no to fitness and food combined in one!

Beer Run ~ Yes, you read it right. There will be beer. Aside from that lovely combination (’cause you know every runner loooooves their beer) they will have food trucks on site to cater to all of your taste buds needs. This will be a great oppurtunity to meet the gang at CrossFit Shazam, stay active, eat, drink, and mingle like a local.
